Crypt of San Carlo Borromeo reopens after a very important restauration work recently completed. From the dialect term “scuoeu” which means “small chapel”, it was designed by Francesco Maria Richini in 1606 beneath the Main Altar of the Cathedral and the remains of San Carlo Borromeo, Patron and Archbishop of Milan from 1564 to 1584, are preserved there. The wear and tear of time, the oxidation of the silver, the deposited surface residues and the unhygienic conditions of this underground and unventilated place made it necessary to plan an intervention that affected the entire decorative and architectural apparatus, with the aim of making it usable again by visitors and faithful from all over the world visiting the Milan Cathedral. In particular, steps were taken to restore the cycle of wall and ceiling decorations made of silver foil; to restore the wooden structure that defines the clinic outside the space that contains the Saint’s urn; to repair and restore the precious tapestries that cover the walls. Also important is the renovation of the electrical system and special systems to adequately enlights the spaces.
